However, what goes through many people’s mind when talking about Alex Chantra is his nationality. They are generally wondering if he is really a Cambodian. That is understandable as to why people think he is not a pour Khmer and might be American or European descendent though he can speak Khmer with no accent. His light skin, height, sharp nose and other traits make Alex Chantra a rare Khmer man in the eyes of many people. OK, let’s not get too excited about his nationality for a movement and look at his entertainment performance instead because that is the focus of his profile. Alex Chantra was one of the old Dara Tomeas group among Nhem Sokun, You Disco, Yut Thisak, Khiev Samphet, etc. and now he still is with the Dara Tomeas group. Though Nhem Sokun is the group leader after You Disco left the group, Alex Chantra is now considered to be a Ream Chbong (senor) as well. He is of one the senior Dara Tomeas team members. His performance now includes not only group dance or Robam, but also he begins to have his solo shows and songs recorded. He is on the rise and he is one of the key actors of Reymeas Production. So if you are wondering where he came from and how he landed with Reaymeas Production, here is a brief synopsis:

Many would agree with a Khmer famous saying that “A tree leaf wouldn’t fall away from its tree.” It is true for most cases but Alex Chantra is a leaf that has dropped away from its tree. He was born in a very strongly business oriented family. So he should have started his career in the business arena, yet he managed to break his family’s career path from generations to get into Khmer performing arts. He said that was tough but he determined and kept up. Today, everybody has accepted him for what he is and what he is doing. The drive of his entertainment career is really his dream to be a star and be famous. Regardless of problems or disagreement from his parents, Alex Chantra determined and worked his way toward his dream since he was in his elementary school. Though today he is not yet on the top, he is obviously emerging and more and more people begin to know him. Very soon, he will be rising to the top.

Since there was no support from his family or any background in performing arts, Alex did not know how he could step into the Khmer entertainment arena. He was all by himself and the only thing he had was his dream. Talking to many friends about his dream, Alex Chantra then decided to join a club and that was the only way to make his way into the Khmer entertainment world without connection. So he registered and joined Dara Meas Club owned by Char Rithy – a key stage manager of TV5. As he expected, with less than a month into the training, there was an audition at the club. Alex Chantra took his opportunity and participated in the audition with other 100 students. Surprisingly, he received a first place award from the club among all the contestants and what came with the award was an opportunity for him to work for TV5. That was when Alex Chantra could stand on stage, performed live on TV and proved to Cambodia that he could be an artist and that he was now an artist.

From that point on, he was noticed by different music production companies and contacted to work for Hang Meas Production and many other production companies. He continued to sing with TV5 in a program called Don Trey Samai Yuveavay. He was also an MC for TV5 commercial program for Fomol formula for a year with Pov Pom Nngear who is now a singer for Classic Production. Other music Production companies he worked for were U2, SSK, Reak Smey Neak Meas, Bopha, New World and SM.

In the middle of 2006, Alex Chantra’s contract with TV5 expired and that was when he came to work for Reymeas Production. He was first hired as a background dancer and after a few shows, Nhem Sokun and Chay Lydalen recommended him to Ms. Khiev Chanda to be part of the Dara Tomeas team. That was when he joined Dara Reymeas and Tormeas teams. For only two years with Reymeas Production, Alex Chantra became very well-known to the world, especially USA because Reymeas Production is a USA based company – most of their DVDs are sold in USA. Before he joined Reymeas Production, nobody in USA knew about Alex Chantra – but now Alex Chantra is a very familiar name in Khmer entertainment communities throughout USA. To prove that, you can visit Youtube or one of Khmer entertainment websites such as Angkorthom.US, you’ll be overwhelmed with the amount of his videos and discussions and that is not to mention that Cambodian Entertainment, Inc. is working to bring him to USA to perform in the near future. If the plan is successful, this is going to be his first time to perform outside of the country and we are sure that he will rise and shine afterward.

OK, enough said about his career and you now may be wondering when we are going to talk about his biography as you have been waiting to know if he a Koun Kath American or European or not. So here we go: Alex Chantra was born on August 12, 1986 right in the heart of Phnom Penh – Bong Proleth – Prampie Makara Section. His father’s name is Lim Meng Cheang who is a businessman for all his life. His mother is Lok Cheng – house wife. He said that both of his parents are Chinese. So Alex Chantra is not American or European but a Koun Kath Chen (Chinese/Khmer). His real name is Lim Po Srun. Alex Chantra is his stage name. Now, people know him as Alex Chantra. Very few know his real name. He said that Alex is his American and Chantra is his Khmer name. Alex Chantra was educated in Khmer schooling system and speaks Khmer very fluently without Chinese accent at all. He went to Wat Donak Vichea Elementary school when he was young and then went to Pras Yu Kunthor College. After graduating from college, Alex Chantra went on to Nation Management University and took marketing as his major. At the same time he also went to Culture and Fine Arts University and took Decoration as his major. Due to his busy schedule with his work, he had to quit both schools to focus on his job with Reymeas Production. Besides Khmer, he said he can also speak English and Mandarin.

Alex Chantra is a handsome and charming man. There is no doubt there are many girls in the world who have set their eyes on him. So if you are wondering if he is still single now, yes he is. However, if you are wondering if he has somebody in his heart, there is no certain answer for it as stars do not admit or advertise their love life. Rumors about someone was or is having a relationship with him included Vang Srey Nou, Chay Lydalen and Pov Pom Nngea. Not only that he is handsome and charming man, he also is pleasant and friendly.
